The Oblast Centre is Luhansk. Administrative-territorial division: 18 raions. It is located in the South-Eastern part of Ukraine. It is former Voroshylovhrad Oblast. The greater part of the territory is a wavy plain, cut by ravines and cleavages. In the South there is the Donetsk Highland (Mohyla Mehetna 367 m). In Luhansk Oblast a part of Donetsk Coal Basin is located. The climate is moderately continental. The rivers of Luhansk region belong to the watershed of the Siverskyi Donets river. There are 60 lakes, the biggest one is Vovche. The Oblast was established in 1938. Territory: 26,7 thousands sq. km.
